Die Foneties Verteenwoordigende Eenlettergrepige Woordlyste in Afrikaans (FVEWA) was developed to fill the void of true phonetically representative and balanced word lists in Afrikaans. Van Heerden (1999) determined the sound distribution of sounds in Afrikaans using the phonetic transcript of conversation in Afrikaans, the results of which were used to develop the FWEVA.
