Business Insider Showcases NASA Taking the eMoyo KUDUwave to Space
Business Insider South Africa recently showcased eMoyo’s latest success story: A made-in-SA hearing test is about to launch to the ISS, after makers ‘create our own luck’
Though the KUDUwave is its flagship product, eMoyo also makes Business Insider SA’s favourite face mask for those who wear glasses.
Space as many may not know, is loud! Consequently, avoiding hearing loss in astronauts has been one of NASA’s main medical goals for decades.
The KUDUwave is designed to be lightweight, durable and simple to use outside of a sound booth. Developed in South Africa, this fully portable, medically certified device went to extreme heights, consistent with the eMoyo dream of innovating the care provided for the wellbeing of the human spirit.
The KUDUwave is equipped to perform air and bone audiometry, speech testing as well as bilateral tympanometry with acoustic reflexes – all without having to remove or reposition the device on the patient’s head. With a few tweaks (considering the lack of gravity in space) the KUDUwave was classified as fit for space medicine and was approved for deployment to the International Space Station this past weekend.
The 15th NASA-contracted Northrop Grumman Commercial Resupply Mission began with the launch of the CRS-15 Cygnus spacecraft on Saturday, February 20, 2021. The KUDUwave was on board and deployed to the International Space Station (ISS) successfully. Our professionally qualified KUDUwave Pro TMP was packaged as a manifested piece of space hardware and, as such, this space hardware will be used for the inaugural On-Orbit Hearing Assessment.
Boothless audiology is particularly safe and effective during the coronavirus pandemic, providing a solution for open-air hearing testing and eliminating the need of sound attenuation by a large booth which can fit a patient inside. The space saving benefits of the compact KUDUwave headset will prove to be invaluable due to the severe space restrictions onboard the ISS.

Testimonials from the eMoyo Management Team From the hearts of the individuals who have had the opportunity to live a dream come true, Jillian Scotland, John Tidy and inventor, Dr. Dirk Koekemoer:
“The dream of working for a company such as eMoyo on its own is a dream come true. The dream of giving of yourself to those that need it most, is the most humble opportunity one can get, but hearing the dream of your CEO “ I want to reach for the stars and I am not going to stop until I have achieved that – I want to show the world that healthcare can be taken anywhere and that most importantly it can be for all, I want eMoyo to make a difference in the world ”. Mmmm… reaching for the stars, is that even possible? Stars, space, moon, Mars and NASA is something we only see on TV, either way, the dream of taking the KUDUwave was sold to me and all other eMoyans and that was one of our missions. This mission of taking the KUDUwave to space took hard work and determination, a conscious decision everyday, the journey has been hard, in fact we had many obstacles along the way that were not in our favor or control, and many who wanted to stop us from succeeding. eMoyo endured the backlashes, the pain that comes along with achieving your dream, we give 100% of ourselves 24/7 but yet the world seems to be telling us that it will never be a reality. 3 long years later – our dream is not only a reality but just the beginning.” – Jillian Scotland, COO, eMoyo
“The letters of thanks and appreciation from NASA brought tears to all of us, we had finally done it, we had done the impossible!
When on that fateful day, the 20th of February 2021, we watched with bated breath as the countdown began… and then the Cygnus resupply craft was on its way to space, with our little baby on board. What a momentous occasion. Just putting this in words fills me with so much emotion. Joy, relief, pride and appreciation for the incredible team that made this huge journey possible.” – John Tidy, CQO, eMoyo
“The eMoyan dream escaped the gravity of earth.
As a child, I dreamed of one day living in space. I imagined beautiful airships hanging high up in the atmosphere, close to space with smaller airships zooming up and down between the airship and planet. This airship to be the launchpad for rockets visiting other planets or rockets shooting between base stations on the same planet. Even elevators from the surface of the planet to the airship. I imagined tricorders just like in the Star Trek movies that you swipe over a person’s body that will diagnose and treat a space traveller, does not matter the species of traveller. I imagined augmenting humans with mechanical and electrical circuits. This is nothing more than the dream of so many other children. What this however did to me was to focus my life on creating TV doctors and amazing machines that could make you walk again, see again, hear again, could detect what is wrong with a space traveller or treat a person in the jungle where Tarzan lived.
My hope is still one day to build a tricorder, build these base stations and rockets.
Crazy I know, but why should your dreams ever grow up?
When the KUDUwave launched up into space, a little piece of a childhood dream came true. It was as if a piece of that hunger to create the dream world fed a super rocket that escaped the gravity of earth, that gravity that keeps us locked into the dogmatic cages on earth were set by other people. Dreams can come true, hope is not always in vain.
How does one describe the feeling when that rocket with the KUDUwave inside started to blow out fire on count zero? One can try to imagine how it must have felt, but that type of feeling very seldom happens in life. What a storybook road we travelled up to here. We have stories to tell that will make most innovation companies give up on their dreams, but we did not. We have stories to tell of crying together, of flying together, stories of hope and of pain to create hope, stories of perseverance beyond imagination! It is as if our dreams escaped the gravity of our planet when the second stage of the rocket released the capsule in the vast weightless space around “the pale blue dot”. Our dream to dissolve the barriers between people and quality of life everywhere got supercharged.
If one day, you have the opportunity to visit eMoyo, do so, come meet the people who are creating the future. You will experience passion like in no other place on earth, passion to advance the health of the human spirit.” – Dr. Dirk Koekemoer, CEO & Inventor, eMoyo
